Pirate Raid Tonight!

Arrrrr, mateys.

It’s been quite a few minutes since the last time I broadcast, but I thought this Saturday night would be a good time for another pirate raid on RadioSpiral.net.

I will be playing a nice selection of ambient tunes from Earth Mantra’s The Hundredth Mantra, so I hope you will tune in for that. There will also be a live performance by me.

The show happens TONIGHT, Saturday October 16 at 10p/9p/8p/7p ET/CT/MT/PT (2a UTC), and will last at least 2 hours. As with all RadioSpiral.net programs, the emphasis is on community, so of course there is a live chat.

I hope to see you there!

BWDD – October 4, 2020

Please join me this evening for another edition of Blue Water Drift Dive on RadioSpiral.net.

Tonight I’ll be focusing on live music! Although I will not myself be performing tonight, I’ll be playing nothing but live music from RadioSpiral artists — specifically two wonderful concerts put on by two of my favorite artists.

We’ll begin with Emerald Adrift and his astonishing concert given at one of electro-music.com’s Kansas City festivals, entitled Wings of Morpheus. If you haven’t heard David Herpich’s music before, you need to hear this live set. This is an artist who pushes the boundaries of ambient and electronic music, who creates some of the most satisfying and intellectually challenging abstract music you have ever heard. This concert is one of his best performances, so I encourage you to check it out.

In the second hour, we’ll focus on the live music of that immensely talented artist Brin Coleman. During this hour, we’ll hear Bing Satellites Alive In Lincoln, which Brin recorded in July 2019 as part of the Weird Garden concert series at No. 10 Decimal Place in Lincoln, UK. Truly magnificent music by one of the most productive and influential ambient artists today.

The show happens tonight at 10p/9p/8p/7p ET/CT/MT/PT (2a UTC), immediately following the end of Tony Gerber’s fantastic Ambient Sundays program, and will last at least 2 hours. As with all RadioSpiral.net programs, the emphasis is on community, so of course there is a live chat.

If you tune in, I hope you’ll stop by and say hello …

What a concert.  Tonight, we had a special feature on the music of Emerald Adrift, which included a nearly hour long live concert by the same artist.  All I can say is that we heard some of the most interesting, evocative, and, frankly, kick-ass analog sounds I have heard in quite some time.  Thanks to David Herpich for performing for us tonight.  It was a real treat.

I hope to see you all next week!

On the next BWDD: Emerald Adrift Concert Live

emeraldadrift1I’m very excited to announce that, on the next Blue Water Drift Dive, I’ll be hosting a live on-air concert by David Herpich of Emerald Adrift.  And not only will there be a concert, but I’ll be doing an in-depth feature on the music of Emerald Adrift throughout the broadcast.

For those of you who might not know, Emerald Adrift is a nom de plume of composer and electronic musician David Herpich. Eclectic yet unified, the music of Emerald Adrift explores the unusual confluences of melodic synth-pop with avant-garde abstraction, meditative ambiances with propulsive rhythms, and purely electronic timbres with otherworldly manipulations of sounds from everyday life.

An interest in diverse synthesis technologies has led to the use of various commercial and academic computer-based applications, numerous additive, wavetable, FM, and analogue keyboards, and vintage rarities such as the E-mu and ARP 2500 modular systems. Throughout it all, Emerald Adrift has maintained a consistent approach to sonic expression which defies any obvious genre categorization.

David holds degrees in music theory and composition from the University of Kansas, and completed his master’s degree in contemporary composition as a recipient of the University Graduate Fellowship Award at the University of South Florida in Tampa. At both institutions, he focused his studies on electronic music, working under Michael Timpson, Paul Reller, and Edward Mattila. In addition, Herpich has written award-winning works for acoustic ensembles, scored theatre, dance, and film productions, and lectured on the music of Karlheinz Stockhausen.

The show starts at 7 PM US Pacific time / 10 PM US Eastern time on Friday January 19th (3 AM UTC January 20th) and will last at least three hours.  I hope to see you there!

Live concert with Emerald Adrift, Friday January 19th

Just a quick reminder to mark your calendars for the January 19th special edition Blue Water Drift Dive (next Friday).  I’m going to be doing a deep dive into the astonishing music of Emerald Adrift, which will include a live concert by Emerald Adrift.

I have seen this guy play numerous times, and believe me, this is not to be missed.

Hope to see you there!

ob12 cleanIt’s always wonderful to celebrate the return of an old friend, and tonight was my opportunity to do that for my beloved Oberheim OB-12.  We had a great time listening to music inspired by the color blue, and chit chatting about hiking in Japan, the evils of internet service providers, Debussy doing Satie, revolving organ bars, and the mysterious Christmas Asparagus.  Don’t ask – you had to be in the chat room at the time to understand that reference.

The night was cold and wet but the music was warm and inviting.  Hope to see you next week!
